National Honor Society

The National Honor Society is a nationwide organization that promotes the ideals of scholarship, service, leadership, and character in the secondary school student. Student selection by the NHS faculty council is an honor based on student attainment of the four criteria mentioned; scholarship is not the sole criteria for induction. On this page you will find the Paul VI NHS membership selection procedures, as well as other services provided by NHS.

NHS Selection Process

The NHS selection process is as follows:

1. A preliminary list of potential inductees is derived from the junior and senior GPA list. Students will only be considered if they have a cumulative GPA of 3.85 or higher (no rounding).

2. After a discipline review of the candidates by the administration eligible students will receive an application packet in the mail. Students will be evaluated and scored on the following required items:

• Student Service and Activity Form
• Junior nominees should have at least three hours of individual service outside of Paul VI prior to entering junior year. Senior nominees should have at least three hours of service prior to entering senior year. The appropriate documentation and signatures must accompany the service hours.
• Write a 350-word essay that describes the personal quality or trait that you possess in which you most value.
• Ask three Paul VI teachers and one outside mentor to complete a recommendation form.
• In order to be considered for membership all forms in the packet must be returned by the due
date with the appropriate documentations and signatures. Failure to return any part of the
application on time would automatically eliminate a candidate from being considered.

3. After the packets have been sent out, a letter will be sent to parents and guardians. This letter will inform them of their child’s nomination and requirements. Parents or guardians will be required to return this letter with a signature. Failure to return this letter will eliminate the nominee from consideration into the NHS.

4. A faculty council, comprised of six faculty members, appointed yearly by the principal, reviews the application packets and selects the final list of candidates. The final list of candidates is submitted to the principal.

The National Honor Society meets our mission statement in that it shows our commitment to intellectual and social development.

Tutoring

NHS Tutoring

The National Honor Society provides peer/peer tutoring services for students who need remedial assistance. Daily peer/peer tutoring sessions take place in the Media Center during free periods. Tutoring schedules are posted in the Media Center and the guidance office. The schedule lists NHS students who are qualified in particular areas, and who are available for other students who need to be tutored throughout the school day.

Special requests or arrangements can be made if a student’s class schedule conflicts with the master tutoring schedule. All such requests are made through the guidance department.

It is important, however, that all involved realize that the tutors are themselves students and are in no way professional tutors. If a student needs more than mild remedial assistance, or suffers from a learning disability, a professional tutor should be considered.
